I just passed my eighth year as a Utah Home Inspector in the Salt Lake City, Utah and surrounding areas. I’ve helped a lot of people find their perfect home and hopefully they saved a lot of money along the way. I still see new and strange things all the time and learn constantly. So, I want to dedicate this post to the most memorable Inspections and craziest things in the first eight years.
I only faintly remember doing my first paid home inspection it was in March of 2012 and it was in Kaysville, Utah. The house was a 1970’s model with faded yellow siding and a swamp cooler.
The agent was also the buyer. He was going to flip it, so it had a ton of issues.
The reporting software back then wasn’t very good so I also voice recorded everything. The reporting software has come a long way since then, but cane still you some improvement.
Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to inspect a few hoarder houses. Out of those, the one that sticks out the most is the one with wall to wall dolls. Every room in this house had dolls of every imaginable type in an unbelievable number. I couldn’t get to the windows, the outlets or even close enough to the walls to evaluate them properly.
I didn’t save the pics or post any online because of the sellers privacy, but man it was quite a collection.
When I get to a home inspection I ring the doorbell, then knock. If nobody comes to the door, I retrieve the key out of the agents lock box. I do all of this after having the day and time cleared by the real estate agents. I then open the door and yell “home inspector” and then listen for a reply. In what I think was the most awkward moment, I went straight into the kitchen after doing this process, where I scared the life out of a young lady as she was eating breakfast. When I tried to explain the steps that I take before entering a home, I realized she was deaf. On top of that she forgot that I was coming to inspect the home. Making for a very memorable and scary experience for both of us.
The craziest thing of all is how fast time flies. I want to thank all the people that have trusted me with their home inspections, radon testing, meth test and mold testing.
Here’s to the next crazy eight years!
